Messianic Prophecy Number 12: Gen 22.8, 14 – The Lamb a Type of the Messiah

As Abraham and Isaac walked to a place of sacrifice, Isaac noticed that they did not have a lamb with them, to which his father said,

“‘My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.’ So the two of them went together” (Genesis 22.8).

After they reached the place,

and Abraham prepared to offer Isaac, which God had told Abraham to do, God stopped Abraham from carrying out the sacrifice, seeing that Abraham would obey God regardless of what He asked.

Then Abraham saw a ram nearby, offered it to God, and the Bible says,

“And Abraham called the name of the place, The–LORD–Will–Provide; as it is said to this day, ‘In the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided'” (Genesis 22.8, 14).

Abraham knew that the Lord always provided the means for obeying His commands, and so the patriarch assured his son Isaac that such would happen on that day when they went to make a sacrifice.

They had no lamb, for Abraham believed that he would sacrifice his son that day and God would raise Isaac from the dead. Then in verse 13, the principle was fulfilled at that time when the Lord provided a ram for the sacrifice instead of Isaac.

Verse 14 shows the prophetic nature of what followed, that the Israelites understood at Mount Moriah the Lord would provide a sacrifice.

Second Chronicles 3.1 shows that Mount Moriah is Jerusalem,

“Now Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the LORD had appeared to his father David, at the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite” (Second Chronicles 3.1).

As is well known, the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ died on that mount, for John the Baptizer identified Jesus as the Lamb of God,

“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!'”(John 1.29).

Then Jesus Himself said something later that indicated where He would eventually die,

“Nevertheless I must journey today, tomorrow, and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem” (Luke 13.33).
